The "Square Colosseum" as it is popularly
known was the work of Guerrini. Commissioned and completed
in the early thirties it was largely inspired by the
fascist or "bombastic modernism" architectural
style of the time. Now unused the building is a relic
to a less than illustrious past. Nevertheless, the
building was recently used by an American sportswear
giant in a spectacular t.v. advertisement promoting
the Soccer World Cup...

Colloseum |
|
Constructed over 2000 years ago the coliseum is regarded
as the symbol of Rome's eternity. For over 500 years
the colloseum played host to spectacular bloodthirsty
shows involving gladiators and wild animals.... Understandably,
given its age, the coliseum is not in the best of nick...
Indeed someone recently likend it to a "half eaten
cake" have a look and tell us what you think of
il Colosseo

Piazza
Navona |
|
Piazza Navona literally translated means the square
of the big ship. In fact the shape of the piazza is
an oblong ship shape and in roman times was flooded
with water to allow mock sea battles to be staged.
The two most important architectural works lie directly
opposite each other and are: the fountain of four rivers
(Bernini) and the Church of Sant'Agnese in Anone (Borromini)
- there was great rivalry and jealousy between these
two architects and legend has it that the statue in
Bernini's fountain has his arm aloft in an attempt to
shield his eyes from the perceived hideous sight of
Borromini's church

| Trevi Fountain |
|
The Trevi Fountain or Fontana di
Trevi is known the world over as the fountain where
Anita Ekberg cooled off in Fellini's La Dolce Vita.
Nowadays though, anybody caught emulating such an act
is likely to be arrested! oh how times have changed...
in any case it isn't advisable as the water comes from
an underground stream as old as ancient rome and is
absolutely freezing and just to sway any would be bathers
the water contains huge amounts of bleach! Instead why
not be satisfy yourself by lobbing a coin into the water
and making a wish... if you dont then legend has it
that you will never return to Rome
